The Beginnings of Italy
Marsala is a town of great merit: the name itself recalls one of the most famous wines in Italy, which was invented here.
In the Roman age, it was the seat of the Governor of Sicily: while in modern time, Garibaldi choose to dock with a thousand patriotic and from here, to eventually conquer and unify Italy.
In town, there are remains of each period and event that has involved this part of Sicily. To learn about its antiquity, we will visit Baglio Anselmi Museum, with its beautiful Punic ship, the Lilibeum Archaeological Park and the archaeological area of Via Garraffa.
The XVI century is represented by the massive defensive city walls and the remarkable tapestries on display in the Museum of Tapestries; the Baroque Age by the Duomo and the beautiful and handsome noble palaces.
We follow the itinerary of Garibaldi, from the main gate of the city (named after the General) to the Garibaldi’s Museo, which plays host to many objects and artifacts from this time period.
While in Marsala, we highly recommend combining the tour with one or more wine tastings and vinery experiences; Marsala is considered the homeland of the highest quality Sicilian wine. We can visit together one of the excellent vineries in town, just send us the request and we will be happy to add this to your itinerary.
