The largest Archaeological Park in Europe
A stroll with nature and archaeology.
The Park of Selinunte is vast and encompasses the whole surface of the ancient Greek city located here around 2,500 years ago. Many quarters still have to be brought to light making this site even more fascinating: a large part still preserves its original flora and fauna and the park is thus not only an archaeological site, but also a nature reserve where one can take an inspiring and glorious amble.
The visible archaeological remains are strewn throughout the park and they are all extraordinary. For centuries, the city was in fact one of the most magnificent and powerful cities around the Mediterranean Sea, and highly populous: rich of monumental temples and streets, it was destroyed by the Carthaginians in 409 BC and from that moment, few important remains have survived.
We focus our tour on the main points of interest: visiting the Temples on the Eastern Hill – which in antiquity were influential holy places – and the Acropolis. Taking a golf-cart inside the park, we also have the opportunity reaching the area of the Agora and the Sanctuary of the Malophoros.
The tour of Selinunte always results fascinating and especially when you find yourself in front of the gigantic ruins, one gets the feeling of being very small! It is impressive and gripping to see these enormous blocks and one cannot help but ask how those huge temples were built. For this reason, we will tell you about the building techniques of the ancient Greeks of Sicily, the religious practices, and also what they ate and what forms of objects and tools they used.
It is truly a unique experience to escape the modern world and learn, absorb, breath and sample the culture of the ancient Greeks.
