Transportation

The easiest way to reach Sicily is by plane and there are four main airports: Palermo, Catania, Trapani and Comiso.
From here, you can easily reach many other Italian and European cities with many low-cost airlines servicing these airports. From these, you will find a good bus and train service connecting you to the rest of the island.
We recommend using the most popular and reliable online booking platforms to find the best offers. You can also hire a car or use private transfer companies.

The main Sicilian bus companies are AST, SAIS, SEGESTA, GIUNTABUS, INTERBUS, ETNA TRASPORTI, SALEMI, which connect to many more rural points of interest.
We recommend planning your journey in advance as travelling to the more rustic provinces could require changing once or more, or even an overnight stay.

If you are travelling by car or wish to hire one, your trip is very likely to be quicker and more comfortable.
If you are bringing your own vehicle, it is necessary to cross over to the island via Messina and you are advised to book your ferry trip in advance to avoid queues and higher prices.
Car hire is readily available with many good offers, you can pick up a car at any airport and in the cities (which may also be more economical). As with any car hire, it is important to consider the terms and conditions, and also the terms of insurance.
The speed limit in Sicily is the same as the rest of Italy: 130km on the motorways, 110km on main suburban roads, 90km on minor roads and 50km within towns and cities.
Worth noting is that on many Sicilian motorways, tolls are not in force such as Messina to Palermo and Messina to Catania.

From Sicily, you can reach Sardenia, the islands of Egadi, Eolie, Pelagie, Pantelleria, Naples and Messina using ferry companies such as Grimaldi Lines, GNV, Moby, Liberty Lines, Virtu Ferries.

If you want to use the trains, Trenitalia is the best site to use, there is also an English language page to assist you.
Connections can however be slow with trains arriving or departing late so we might recommend this form of travel for avid fans of train travel or if you are in no hurry to get to your destination!
The two main lines are from Messina to Palermo and Messina to Siracusa with many characteric points of interest along the way.
Some lines such as between Trapani and Petrosino are famous for their historical stations some of which offer aperitif and even concerts which make this form of travel not only fun but cultural too!
Another method of travel is via sailboat. Many travel agencies offer this option and you can even hire a boat complete with your own skipper.
One can reach all points of interest in Sicily by bicycle if you have ample time and plenty of energy. You can find more information through this site: Ciclabili Siciliane, again there is an English page.

A more adventurous way to explore the island is by motorcycle.
Other methods of reaching parts of Sicily is via canoe, vintage vehicle or by foot…
